Teruki Watanabe, Ph.D.

Teruki  Watanabe , Ph.D.

  • Patent Engineer
  • English
  • Japanese

Dr. Teruki Watanbe is a bilingual Japanese-English chemist with a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry. He brings more than four years of experience spanning pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and contract-research to his work in patent prosecution. Dr. Watanabe is the named inventor on a published patent application. He has worked extensively on analyzing complex scientific information, mastering unfamiliar technologies, and translating dense technical findings into clear, well-organized narratives—invaluable skills for his role as patent engineer. Teruki possesses a rare combination of bench-level technical depth and communication skills essential to translating science into strong, defensible patent claims.

Prior to joining OBWB, Dr. Watanabe worked at Magnet Biomedicine and Ikena Oncology. In his role as a scientist he directed drug discovery chemistry across multiple CRO teams keeping synthesis, timelines, and technical priorities on track across several concurrent programs. Work spanned early discovery through candidate nomination: designing medicinal chemistry and PROTAC linker libraries (100–500+ members) from DNA-encoded library hits, analyzing SAR, ADME, PK, and computational data to advance a molecular-glue program into lead optimization, and contributing to development-candidate selection and an IND filing at Ikena. Alongside the chemistry, this included hands-on operation of NMR, LC-MS, and HPLC instrumentation, interpretation of data across 1,000+ compounds, and regular presentation of strategic recommendations to cross-functional teams.

Earlier in his career, while a senior scientist at Adesis, he synthesized 200+ drug analogues for an oncology client in a single year—work that helped drive a 40% increase in the client's contract scope—while also optimizing an iridium-catalyzed photoredox reaction with a flow-chemistry team to unlock synthesis of additional targets. A shared intermediate-tracking system introduced during this time improved team workflow efficiency by roughly 30%, and the scientist's contributions across two fee-for-service projects earned the company's Biggest Impact Award.
