Saudi Arabia Launches Digital Platform for Trademark Enforcement
Saudi Arabia has launched a pilot digital trademark enforcement platform called "Tahaqaq," developed by the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) to strengthen customs-based anti-counterfeiting efforts and streamline communication between customs authorities and trademark owners. The platform connects Saudi Customs, rights holders, and their representatives through a centralized interface, enabling faster, more coordinated handling of suspected infringing shipments.
Unlike traditional border enforcement, which relies on holding goods until a dispute is resolved, Tahaqaq lets rights holders register their trademarks and receive real-time alerts when suspicious shipments are flagged. Importers may retain their goods after submitting an undertaking not to sell or distribute them pending verification, while Customs retains samples and shares digital evidence for remote review.
The goal is to reduce delays, lower detention costs, and improve collaboration between authorities and rights holders — without weakening enforcement. SAIP has confirmed that Customs retains full authority to act when necessary, and the pilot will evaluate workflow efficiency, legal safeguards, and data protection measures going forward.
