PCT Patent Prosecution Highway (PCT-PPH) Pilots: IP5 PPH Pilot Program Extended to 2029

Following a joint decision by the IP5, the five largest intellectual property offices (CNIPA, EPO, JPO, MOIP (former KIPO), and USPTO), the IP5 Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) pilot program has been extended for an additional three-year period, from January 6, 2026, to January 5, 2029.

The PPH program allows applicants to request accelerated examination of their patent applications by relying on a positive PCT international work product established by one of the IP5 Offices as ISA (International Searching Authority) or IPEA (International Preliminary Examining Authority) or an positive national work product established during the processing of a national application or a PCT application that has entered the national phase before one of the IP5 Offices. A positive work product is any written opinion (such as an ISA written opinion, an International Preliminary Examination Report (IPER), or a national office action) according to which at least one of the claims is patentable.

Speeding up the examination process may be convenient to reduce prosecution costs and increase allowance rate.

The IP5 PPH pilot program has been in place since January 1, 2014.
