EPO and IP Australia Launch PCT Pilot Program
Effective March 1, 2026, Australian applicants can designate the European Patent Office (EPO) as both the International Searching Authority (ISA) and International Preliminary Examining Authority (IPEA) under the PCT, as part of a two-year pilot program. This initiative provides a faster, more cost-effective pathway to European patent protection.
An international search report issued by the EPO enables applicants to waive the supplementary search upon entry into the European regional phase, resulting in both time and cost savings.
Once granted, a European patent may be validated in up to 39 member states and can also be converted into a Unitary Patent covering 18 EU countries.
