Dr. Matthew Madsen is dedicated to delivering robust protection for valuable intellectual property assets in today’s highly competitive markets. With deep expertise spanning biotechnology, genetics, plant and animal breeding, pet care, and AI-driven agricultural engineering, Dr. Madsen translates complex technologies into actionable legal strategies.

In his work as a patent attorney, Matthew skillfully negotiates and drafts contracts, manages extensive IP portfolios, and aligns IP strategy with business development goals to support long-term success. Known for his intellectual agility, technical depth, and strategic mindset, he leverages emerging technologies—including artificial intelligence—to stay ahead of the curve.

Prior to joining OBWB, Dr. Madsen led the IP function across four divisions of a multi-billion-dollar company. He coordinated research, led business objectives and oversaw their global IP strategy, directing a team of in-house attorneys to protect R&D investments, reduce risk, and drive innovation.

Matthew previously served as Assistant General Counsel at Bayer/Monsanto, where he led the intellectual property team supporting global R&D and commercial efforts for vegetable, alfalfa, and sugar beet portfolios. He played a key role in shaping international IP policies and public outreach around biodiversity, patenting biological innovations, transgenics, and gene editing. His novel patenting approach strengthened the protection of plant varieties under U.S. law and provided strategic guidance on biodiversity policy.
